Do You Like Georgain Girls?

August 26, 2019
“Do You Like Georgian Girls?”
მეგობრები!

Hello to you all once again!  What a time to be in თბილისი!  It's hot.   Roads are closed for Fast and Furious 9.  People aren't outside in the middle of the day.  The Gospel of Jesus Christ is true.  And sometimes people are willing to talk about it.   We had some good success this week.  We met with some new friends and some old ones.  We had a goal to get four people to church this week.  We got six.   And that was just from our area.   The other areas in the branch got some people to come as well. This is extremely unusual.  We all had very high goals set this week, and everyone was pretty skeptical that we would all meet them, but we did well.
My language abilities are progressing.   Apparently, in this area,  it is really hard to find people to teach in Georgian.  Either they don't know Georgian or they would rather speak English.  Elder Hunt tells me that we have been teaching more Georgian people than normal in this area.  I can usually get the very basic baseline idea of each conversation and I can usually get quite a few individual words.   We have a few people we meet with that really want to help me learn as much as I can.   Georgians are so great.   They also really want me to marry a Georgian girl, which means I need to learn better Georgian so I can.
People always think I'm somehow related to Bobby Fisher the chess player.  As a result, I now know a word that most of the other missionaries don't know.   Chess.  People also are really interested when I tell them I'm from Alaska.  It's surprising how many people know about Alaska here.  They all know that it's very cold.  We did run into somebody that thought America had to give Alaska back to Russia soon because they thought America only bought it for 180 years or something.   Really interesting.
Our friend, Luka, owns a TV channel that helps small businesses.  He really likes the missionaries and has had them do voiceovers for him.  He really likes Elder Hunt, so we did a little TV spot for him explaining what TV 24 does.   What a great service project!  Luka is also hosting the Mission President, and doing an interview with him.  It'll be great to have the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints be more recognizable here in Georgia.  It's so small and it'll be great to have people know more about who we are and what the missionaries here in Georgia do.
We use the Book of Mormon so much here.   After over a decade of not being able to use the Book of Mormon, the missionaries here have been anxious to talk about it more.  The last step is getting it printed,  but it may be another long while.  I placed my first Book of Mormon this week to our new friend Tamazi.  It was a Russian copy,  but that's what we have.  English,  Farsi, and Russian.  When we get the chance,  we show people the Book of Mormon online and have them read the introduction.  We always tell them it's a great book and that we love it.  It really is good and it's worth reading over and over again.  When you actually take the time to read and ponder over it you can gain great insights.   This week I shared a verse with a member.  Ether 12:17.  This isn't the normal verse that is quoted from Ether 12, but I thought it would be good for this member.  It discusses how only after we demonstrate faith can miracles, such as John and the three Nephite disciples of Christ living until the Second Coming, take place.  We need to recognize the miracles in our lives.  If you think there aren't any, pray for increased faith and then open your eyes to them.
That is about it.  Anyway.   Goodbye for now.

So I'm Told Armenian is Waaaaay Easier than Georgian

So, I'm Told Armenian is Waaaaay Easier Than Georgian

მეგობრები
It's been longer than normal since my last email. But I'm in Georgian. So that's neat. We flew into Armenia through Moscow which was very nice. Some of the Armenian missionaries did not enjoy our overseas flight, but I slept very well so it was good. We stayed a couple nights at an Armenia hotel, and met with the mission president and his family. We did some street contacting in Yerevan. I totally placed a pamphlet about the restoration of Christ's gospel. My Armenian is quite good, and that is why I'm convinced that Georgian is significantly harder than Armenian. Anyway.
I said my goodbyes to all the Armenians, and the mission president and his family drove me from Yerevan to Tbilisi. It was a very long drive but the scenery was really pretty and it was good to catch up on a bit of sleep. We got in late so I met my trainer, Elder Hunt. He's been out for a year and a half. It seems that he'll be a good teacher for the next three months. He also said that Armenia is technically a six week language in the MTC.  Please confirm.
My first full day in country, we had a baptismal service and a zone conference, so I got to meet a lot of the members of one branch and all the Georgian missionaries. They're all very fun and it's awesome to have people to speak the language to. We've been busy. We have met with a few people, but since we've had so many special events we haven't been super super jam packed busy.
One more cool thing. The next Fast and Furious movie is filming in Tbilisi literally on the street we live on in Delisi. Yes we saw Vin Diesel and John Cena. That's all I've got for now, but I'll be back next Monday with more news საქართველოდან.

Questions for Elder Fisher

August 19, 2019

Questions for Elder Fisher he answered by email.

How were things on your layovers and your flights?
Why did you get sleep on the flights and the other missionaries didn't?  (Were they busy talking in Armenian to the other passengers?

They were okay. No problems.  We talked to an Armenian family in LAX while we waited for the Russia flight to board.  The other missionaries are just bad at sleeping on planes.

What and when did you get to eat?  Did you get breakfast on Tuesday or just eat in the airport?
Did they serve meals on the flights or did you eat in the airports?

We got breakfast before the airport.   We got Cafe Rio for lunch in SLC. The meals on Aeroflot were quite good.   Two meals on the long flight and a nice lunch on the plane from Moscow to Armenia.

Did you your whole group stay in the mission home?

No we were in an Armenia hotel.   The breakfast was really good every morning.   Pretty fun.

How was the drive to Georgia?  Was it just you, President Picard and his wife or did any of the kids go with you?
What kind of vehicle did you drive in?
What did you do/talk about on your long drive?

It was good. I slept for a little less than half of it.  The countryside is really pretty.   There are some awesome mountains.   The three kids came.  Apparently they all go everytime.   I studied words and we had some standard conversation.

How was the zone conference?
Does anyone remember Da Parsoni or Dzma Muire?

Nice.   It was cool to meet everyone.   The mission is transitioning to 100% SYL, so the ultimate goal is no English ever.  Everyone knows ძმა მუირი და და პარსონი.  Not all are fans, but that's okay.

Where is your companion from?  --> most recently, Japan.  He went to BYU for a semester and a half before.

What is the church building like in Georgia?
What is your apartment like?
Do you have enough hangers?

I don't know how to describe them.   They are not the same.  They are both nice.  Apartment is nice.   Has a balcony.   Kitchen, bathroom living area all good.   Not really enough hangers.

Does it smell different there?  (Some countries have unique smells.)  Yes

Are there other missionaries living near you?
 Not really

What kind of phone does your companion have?
When will you get a phone?
Do you have enough money in your account for your phone?
Do they have case protectors and screen protectors for phones?

Samsung A50. Today.  Yes I had enough.   Yes.

Is there anyone to play chess with you?  (meme from Best Two Years)
Yes, everybody assumes I'm related to Bobby Fischer.

Armenia Skip a Day

August 15, 2019

“Armenia Skip a Day”

Hello Parents,
Wednesday did not exist for us so that was cool. Aeroflot was a good airline.  We were very surprised.  I got tons of sleep.  Nobody else did really.  I leave with Picard’s tomorrow to go to the Georgian zone conference.  There were a whole bunch of Armenians on both of our flights.  On the 12 hr flight there were two Armenians next to me that knew perfect English and wanted to know why I was learning Georgian.  We talked to them for a bit which was so cool.  Anyway.  I can’t think of anything else to say, so.  Goodbye.

Aeroflot Soviet

August 7, 2019

Aeroflot Soviet

       მეგობრები!
Let us begin with the biggest news of the week.  ფრენა გეგმები!!!!! --> FLIGHT PLANS!!!!  When we got that email, we could not believe how real this is getting.  We are going to Armenia!  On Aeroflot Soviet!  Soviet!  There is still an airline out there with Soviet in the name.  This has been our entertainment for the past five days.  In other news, the Lithuanians leave today.  After their 10 week stay here at the MTC, one has left for the Provo Mission, two more leave to Roseville, CA, and we have one going to Fresno, CA.  We are quite ready since we have less than a week left here in the State of Utah.  Those of us not from Utah are anxious to no longer be in Utah, because when you can only see the same acres of Utah, it can get a little stale.  Those that are from Utah are even more impatient.  This is okay, because we are going to live up to our potential and finish out strong.
Very little happened this week besides the flight plans, but there was an exciting medical story.  Elder Shamshoian fractured his ankle.  He jumped up to block a volleyball.  He landed on two legs.  Somehow, he fractured his ankle.  He may not come to Armenia with us.  He may be sent home for a time.  He may be reassigned for a transfer.  Super unlucky.  Extremely sad.  We are praying for him, but whatever happens is meant to happen.  Also, it is a little funny that it happened to him.  And in the least exciting way possible.  Anyway.
Last Skype TRC was yesterday. Apparently it wasn't even a Georgian.  He was a missionary that served there and now lives in Russia. We discussed repentance. I really didn't understand what he said. I thought I did, but I did not. We discussed repentance and the need to repent every day, so that we can improve ourselves. I thought was saying we need to repent every day, pray every day, improve ourselves so that we can better become like Christ and our Heavenly Father. After the TRC, და პარსონი (Da Parsoni) informed me that he isn't the most steadfast member of the Church and that he has some ideas that aren't necessarily doctrinally correct.  All those things I thought he said we should do, ya, he said we don't need to do those things. But, და პარსონი told me that if there was one principle of the gospel she would teach him, it would be repentance. Kinda cool, but weird. Anyway the Lord works in mysterious ways.
Lately I have been considering the power of the Book of Mormon.  Millions have come closer to Christ by reading that book.  In Georgia, people have become members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, only having read a few verses.  There is power in The Book of Mormon.  It is full of truth.  When I say that, I mean that everything written in that book is true.  Read it.  If you don't have a copy, I know that each one of you has some way to read it.  Gospel Library app on your phone, churchofjesuschrist.org, find a member of The Church (I know you know some) and they will get you one.  If all else fails, I will send you one or get one to you somehow.  Just read it.  It is the most true book on Earth.  You will get closer to God by abiding by its precepts.  I love you all.
